Just a reminder...

Next Episode:
Sunday, March 6, 8/7c
"Harris Family"
Who knew Kermit and Miss Piggy had a knack for design? Extreme Makeover: Home Edition -- along with the help of a special team of Muppets -- gives a home makeover to the family of America's first-ever set of surviving African American sextuplets.

When Diamond Harris was pregnant, she was put on bed-rest and had to leave her nursing job. Husband Chris's salary as a third-grade teacher wasn't sufficient to cover their expenses, and soon they found their home in foreclosure. Fortunately their wonderful neighbors rallied around them and raised enough money to stop the bank proceedings. But the 2000-sq. ft., three-bedroom house was in desperate need of repair, and matters were made worse when Hurricane Ivan sent a tree crashing through the living room, which had become the children's playroom.

Because there were so many children in the family, design team leader Ty Pennington thought some "child experts" should be brought in to help. The Muppets themselves heeded his call, along with Florence Henderson -- "Mrs. Brady" herself!

yup, love my TiVo! did you see the Denver, CO one a couple of weeks ago? They built a duplex for two homeless families - that was in our town of Arvada. It was pretty cool to go check out the site. Everyone but Eduardo was skiing - but he was very nice.

Lucky for them it snowed someone on the set told a friend of mine that if it didn't snow they were going to ship some in! They filmed it right around Thanksgiving.

Our local multiples club visited the home one day with their children and EHM filmed one of the workers babysitting all of the twins, triplets, and quads while the moms "took a break". I hope the clip makes it into the show.

Loved the house and the family! But I knew as soon as they showed that dry erase wall that those markers would find their way to other walls that aren't so erasable!!! lol Must be the mom in me! I thought it was too funny when they showed the bathroom door and mom said it was already on the bathroom floor too! Who's bright idea was that?? Obviously not someone with kids, let alone multiples that can raise havoc in a heartbeat!! lol But loved the house and loved that nursery! I can't wait to see the behind the scenes stuff tonight!

I watched it last night. The house was awesome! I liked the kids room the most. They put the 4 boys in one room with their own bath and the kids got a separate room with their own bath. Big brother's room looked great too. So age appropriate with the computer too. The backyard treehouse and the playground was a great idea. Plus, the family got nanny services for a year, free circus passes, and college scholarships for all 7 kids. I was so happy for them I was in tears. They are a great family and they deserved it.

Also with the HUFCOR walls (Dry Erase). Why would you want to encourage writing on the walls. My girls (Twins) are allowed to do crafts in 2 places only, Kitchen and Basement.

The only way it really works is if the labor and material are donated to you by a nonprofit company. (ie. church, firecompany, anyone with a tax id #) Then anyone who donates can write off the donation. I am not an accountant but trust me this is something I have learned in the last year. Normal people are not accustomed to instant fame and fortune. Yes it is nice to be in the spotlight for alittle while, but let me tell you something if you want privacy ever again FORGET IT!!!! Everyone knows where you live and that scares me.

I read an article in the paper on Extreme Home Makeover that told how they are able to do this for families. It said they *rent* the house from the people for the week they are there. While they are there, they make them *improvements* to the house, which is not supposed to trigger the taxes. I think the article was in USA Today, several months ago.

Here's another article: http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=2552

That still does not take into account the increase in utilities, insurance, etc., but this is how they explained it in the article.

They still will get reappraised and have to pay property tax based on the value of their homw. And last nights episode was worth way more than $50,000. Trust me they will get a 1099-misc form. Nothing is for free.

If this is all really true....it is sad. Because according to the article (in the link 2 above this) it states that they purposefully look for the poor and needy etc. That basically means, they build them a house that they end up moving out of!!!!

I was watching a show when it first started. It looked like it was in a lower-income area. The house ended up being HUGE! All I could think of was the day they sell their house, they will never get what it is worth. Not good for the sellers, but obviously for the buyers.

They need to rethink who they target. This isn't right. So, where is 20/20 or PrimeTime with the truth about these shows?

Who do you think owns 20/20 and primetime? Lookup the major Cable networks Timewerner and Comcast. I am telling you it is a racket. We all watch. Those people should get a percentage of the ratings now that would be something. They don't see a penny of the ratings for the show. It is a way bigger headache then most of us think. And if they complained about anything they would be ungreatful, RIGHT?

EXACTLY - what say do they have? It is like winning the lottery no one teaches who how to manange that large amount of money. That is why those people end up poorer than what they started out at. You can have all the fancy gadgets in the world but you are still going to have to raise those kids. GOD has taught us to rely on him and him only. No matter what we are human and humans are not as reliable as you think. God will NEVER let you down. "Ask and you shall receive." -"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that
asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him
that knocketh it shall be opened...If ye then, being evil,
know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much
more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things
to them that ask him?"
Matthew -8, 11, KJV

"And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,
believing, ye shall receive."
Matthew 21:22, KJV

My husband is one of the contractors for Extreme Home Makeover and my understanding is that ABC has nothing to do with the show. They buy each episode individually from Lock and Key Productions. Just an FYI
He is going to ask the producer about the whole tax thing tomorrow for me. I'll keep you updated.

Home makeover not as free as it seems

Property tax bill likely to double; work's value could count as income

By Roger M. Showley
STAFF WRITER

July 1, 2004

JIM BAIRD / Union-Tribune
A team of about 140 designers, workers and volunteers worked around the clock to build a new house for Brian Wofford and his eight children on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." The show kept the family in the dark from June 23 until yesterday when they returned from their all-expenses-paid trip to the Caribbean and saw their house for the first time.

From "Extreme Makeover" to extreme tax bite.

That's what Brian Wofford, owner of the Encinitas house virtually rebuilt for the ABC program "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," faces once the hoopla and well-wishing are over.

The new 4,600-square-foot house, valued by the city of Encinitas at $410,474, already is on the radar screen of County Assessor Gregory Smith. Before work started, the 31-year-old house measured 1,212 square feet on a 7,744-square-foot lot.

Smith said he expects to send Wofford a supplemental property assessment statement late this year that will likely double the present property tax bill of $2,698.

"If this was offered to you, wouldn't you jump at it?" Smith asked rhetorically. "It's a choice and he chose this. I'm assuming they (the show's producers) told him there would be tax ramifications."

Smith pointed out that Wofford is free to contest any new assessment and present evidence that the improvements are not as valuable as determined by officials.

Wofford said yesterday that he expects his property tax bill to increase, but said it's worth it.

The trail of the tax collector began at Encinitas City Hall June 23 with the issuance of a building permit for the addition. The associated fees for planning, building, engineering and fire inspection services totaled $5,612.

Then came school-impact fees from the Encinitas Union School District and San Dieguito Union High School District. Those were put at about $9,700, based on a per-square-foot charge of $2.24.

The income-tax implications facing Wofford as a result of the renovation are not as clear-cut.

A spokeswoman for Edemol USA, the show's producer, could not say what tax advice had been given to Wofford or other homeowners featured in "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" – most of whom are in California.

But Newsweek magazine reported in May that documents it obtained indicate that the producers told participating families they should face no income tax consequences.

The magazine said that's because the families in the program are "renting" their houses to the production company during the frenetic renovation. A long-standing tax provision allows homes to be rented for less than 15 days a year with no tax consequences, and with improvements voluntarily made during that period by the tenant considered to have no value to the owner.

La Jolla tax attorney Cris John Wenthur called that reasoning "incredible" and predicted "Extreme Makeover" families may face skeptical IRS agents or have to battle out their cases in tax court.

"It falls within the letter of the law," he said. "Does it fall within the spirit of the law or is it a sham?"

If the 15-day rent and improvement rule doesn't stand, he estimated Wofford's 2004 state and federal tax bill would be an additional $200,000 or more, if the value of new construction, the building permit fees, new furnishings and landscaping were all considered taxable.

But not to worry. Wenthur said the easy thing will be for Wofford to refinance his house and use his newly minted equity to pay what's due.

A spokesman for the IRS said no ruling has been issued on tax implications facing "Extreme Makeover" households and advised participants to seek advice from tax attorneys and CPAs.

Now that would be a great spinoff: "Extreme Makeover: Taxpayer Edition."

Staff writer Ben Fuchs contributed to this report.

Excuse me. Why can't we just be happy for these families and leave it alone. Let them worry about the taxes and expenses. It's their business, not ours. Why are you all trying to figure out his salary, how much the utilities would be, and the waterpark expenses? Why do we have to be so negative and look on the downside of everything. After all, they did get scholarships for all seven children and free nanny service for a year. You can't beat that!

Because it is all fake!!!!!!!!! I can't be happy for them. I feel sad for them. No offense you wouldn't understand, and I don't expect you to. I was trying to let everyone know what it is really like. Its hard enough to raise 6 kids and now you have to deal with the added mess. I just don't want anyone to make the seame mistakes. Daddyof8 -
I know you haven't been posting on this forum long, so I want you to know this:
I have found that no matter what you say in your posts, there is always going to be someone who disagrees or 'gets their panties in a bunch' (my dh's fav line..lol)....and you find yourself surprised. Don't let just one (or a few) negative deter you or make you 'drop the issue'. I don't like to focus on the negative side of things either, but there are some truths in life we all need to be educated on and have our eyes opened to....and this is one of them. (God's love is another...and you're good at that one too!
)
As long as we keep it respectful in speaking our mind, experiences or opinions,- say what you want. (It's taken me years of practice on here to learn this, and God Himself sometimes..lol) You've done all of that. Please keep it up. I love your posts.
Blessings..Laura

Thank you. I don't want to offend anyone. But it makes me so mad when people speak from their heads instead of researching what they are talking about. Going from a family of four to a family of 10 in less than 1 year has changed my thinking process completely. I know what I am talking about from experience. I am not being cocky, I am being truthful and helpful. Why should other people go through this if we have done it already. Don't reinvent the wheel!

I do think you have the best intentions on warning people especially becaues you've gone through something similar. I'm not trying to start anything but asking an honest question-did you do any reasearch on THIS show? Like I said, I'm totally not trying to start anything, I'm just curious. I told my husband what was going on in this thread and he was going to try to talk to the producer today and get the scoop.
I'm sorry that you had a horrible experience and I pray that the families of Extreme Home Makeover are not experiencing what you have gone throught, but rather, enjoying their beautiful new homes.

When we did the TLC shows, in our contract, it said we were responsible for taxes. Well, we told them if that's the case, we're outta here. I know it's not like getting a new home but TLC picked up the tax bill and rewrote our contract. We paid nothing!

Good Luck to ALL the Extreme Makeover Families!

Why would you need to pay taxes on a show where they have dialog with you and take? That doesn't make sense, I guess there must have been gifts but even then those should be tax free. Weird.

Why do you think we said we would not pay?! There were gifts, meals and services rendered. Myself, Sandy & Krystal refused to pay any taxes on what should be free. Maybe if Jillstwiplets see this she can answer cause I don't have an answer for you.

I think this thread has gotten out of hand, everytime I go to post on another more important thread, I can't find it. Sorry for even reminding anyone it was on.

Let me see if I can clarify: If you are on a show - Oprah, Jeopardy, Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, TLC makeover shows, etc. and you receive anything, the fair market value of your "gift" or "winnings" or "prize" is taxable income to you. Same with winning a sweepstakes, a television in a drawing, etc. I don't remember, but I think the dollar amount for tax reporting is $400. Essentially, businesses are limited to gifts of $25 or less.

Hope this helps.

Robin

We were on Oprah a couple of years ago and received a bed. We never received any forms about the value of the bed, the hotel and food bill or paid any taxes on it. I guess we slipped by!?
We did have to sign a form stating that if we sold the bed we couldn't advertise it as "as seen on Oprah" and I'm sure that we were responsible for any taxes deemed payable.
I think this thread has been very civil and informative. We should all remember nothing is life is free (except love) and beware of gifts offered.

I am sure there are many of us thinking the same thing. We would gladly pay the taxes and still come out waaaaay ahead. I am happy for them and anyone else who gets some help. If someone doesn't want to pay the taxes, then they can say "no". I wish I had gotten to see the house, we ended up in the ER Sunday night, but my in-laws said it was wonderful.

I am very happy for these families....at times jealous because I would love a new kitchen and at least 1 extra bathroom (5 girls and 1.5 bathrooms). But I am also in shock and appauled that they show how much they are helping these people when reality is they can't afford squat! So, even if they took out a loan based on their new equity...could they afford the payments? Most likely not.

I don't recall 1 family (since like the 4th or 5th show) that had anything to their name except the house. I agree that it is some sort of sham and shame on TV. But as I write this...HELLO! that IS what TV is about. Ratings. How do you explain "who's my daddy?" type shows.

Would they have high ratings with average people? I think they would....but my guess is that the networks don't. Plus they don't think others are smart enough to figure them out and we would continue to believe it is all charity....free. As this thread shows, it isn't and shame on them!

I'm more sensitive to the show becaues of the involement my husband has, but I agree with the ladies. The houses are beautiful and the intentions are good. I know most of the contractors and businesses who give to the show are NOT doing it for the marketing (who can read the credits at the end? ) but of the families. Yes, there are ratings to think of but, like Tiffani said, the families don't have to sign the contracts. I know the producers and staff do everything possible to take care of the families. I would LOVE a home like that!!

I live in Birmingham and visited the house on the last day and it is only 5000 square feet. Our local newspaper said that their new house was reappraised at $2.5 million. Most of the houses in their neighborhood are lucky to sale for $150,000-$200,000. Extended members of the family were selling items from their new home on ebay a few weeks after the house was complete. (example: an African mask and African print)
As a teacher in Birmingham, I know that the salaries aren't that great unless you have a Master's and then it still isn't that much better. The Harris family is GREAT at reaching out to the community so I am sure if they get in financial trouble, they will seek help from the community.
I am happy for this family to have better living conditions but I do wonder how long they will stay there.

Here's a good idea. They can charge the neighbor kids to use the water park in back! Then they can pay their water and electricity bill and maybe pay their taxes!

Can I just say one thing: If the Harris family won't be able to pay for the utilities and cost of the house they had no business going on the show. (I'm not saying they won't be able to pay but if they can't. . . ) I mean how long is the community going to support them? I can understand helping them with their first house, that couldn't be helped on their part but I really don't see why they NEED this huge house. Talk about living beyond your means.

I watch the show weekly and am excited for the families. However, in the back of my mind, I remain aware that there are potential income tax consequences, increased property tax and utilities costs, statistics regarding "lottery winners", etc. I've wondered if these families wouldn't be better served by meeting their needs in a more modest fashion; however, we wouldn't tune in weekly to watch them build habitat homes, now would we!

Let's not be judgemental about the families. Let's just pray that their blessing is wisely protected for their sake.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the house. But as a father of 8 kids
4 year old twins GG and 10 month old sextuplets BBB GGG it is a big change in the monthly bills from 2000 sq. ft to 5200 sq.ft. I wonder what the utilities are a month. Here they went from mortgage free (community donated $ to pay off mortgage) to a reaccessment of $2 million house. Maybe 5200 sq. ft is too much. If it were me I would be worried about paying my new bills. Also we were on a tv show that supposedly donated all the building materials then why did I get a 1099-misc income form for $59000 from NBC. Interesting? I pray and hope ABC doesn't do the samething to the Harrises. Otherwise I am happy for them. I know how much work it is and I know what it is like to lose your income. After we found our we were having six kids my employer told me that he couldn't afford our insurance and he fired me. I tried to fight in court but in PA "fire at will" is legal. So I was unemployed for 8 months. You might ask "I thought insurance isn't based upon qunatity of kids?" It depends on the policy. But employers might think of down the road problems. These kids could all be high risk. So all in all CONGRADULATIONS HARRIS FAMILY!!!!!!! Just be careful. Take it day by day or moment by moment. GOD will take care of you!!!

I remember hearing that Becky Dilley felt the same way. The community helped them get big house with several bathrooms when the kids were little. They eventually moved to a smaller home with 1 bathroom. She said she didn't want to spend her children' formative years cleaning bathrooms!
The houses they build on Home Make Over are beautiful but I often wonder how practical and affordable they are in the long run.

My dh made that comment to me last night about how the house was nice and all like all of them are but what happens later? I know some are blessed with the CEO's paying off their mortgage or giving them $100,000+ for utilities but what about the ones who don't? At least college is paid for. I am curious about this too. I guess in the long run they could sell the house since it definitely is worth more than they paid for it and get an affordable one. But what were they thinking with light colored furniture and breakables everywhere?!? I'm sure a lot of it was for show as I know how it is when the Producer wants to get his "perfect shot" as they did with us a few times on both Baby & Makeover Stories. Anyway, I am jealous though.

Wow - I always wondered about that... the taxes. I can't believe they sent you a form to have to pay taxes on all that at the end of the year. Yeah.. I amsure you are grateful and that is a minimal amount to pay for what was done for you... but you are right... if you cant afford to make the changes yourself.. chances are you cant afford the taxes and upkeep also. I wonder if ABC will send them the tax form. Very interesting.

I always wonder how the families are going to afford those houses too. On one recent episode, they did give the family a large check to help to cover expenses. Let's hope that they always do that and just don't air that part.

The houses on that show just seem to be getting bigger and bigger!

We were talking about the show yesterday afternoon at work. I was talking to a college student who said that they had been discussing it in an Economics class. According to the prof (don't know if it's true or not) 25% of the people who have been on the show have already lost their homes.

DH and I always comment on the fact that we don't understand how people will be able to afford these houses. And I didn't even have a clue about the 1099 -- of course it makes sense, you are taxed on any other "winnings". I have a friend who was on the Price is Right a couple of years ago. She said she actually LOST money, she said she would never do it again.

It sure was a beautiful home, but I agree that the white carpets weren't actually "multiples friendly". Maybe they should've hired some of us as consultants???

Wow, I didn't even think of that. So what you're saying is that between the taxes and the expense of upkeep that they might have to sell their house? Well, I would think that they would make a profit on it if they sell. Anyone know if they are allowed to sell the property after it's fixed up?

I wonder what their contract says about sellng the house? But of course a lot of the value is the "stuff" in the house which of course you couldn't sell. You also have to take into account the neighborhoood the house is in. You don't want to own the most expensive house in the neighborhood - it makes it too hard to sell.

I guess it just goes to show that there is no such thing as a "free lunch". Of course that wouldn't stop me from being on the show...you'd just have to go into with the knowledge that it's not "free".

My parents live next door to the very first family that was on Extreme Home Makeover and not to long after the show aired they moved out. It was totally confusing to us but when my Dad asked them how they could move out of a house that was just custome built for them they told them that taxes had killed them and that they were more in debt from the show than they were before the show. How terrible is that. I am sure that the show totally blesses some people but if people are not expecting the 1099 that is going to show up then its a brutal surprise.
God I dont want to be surprised like that ever.

Was that the show with the girl Olivia who had a heart condition? The first few shows they didn't even tear the whole houses down. Now they are tearing them down to the foundations. That's a shame. So was that reunion show all a set up? They showed most of those families at a year later and they were still in their houses?!?

But they didn't show all of them and I wondered about that when I was watching the reunion show - but now I guess I know why. If you look at the ABC website they have done 29 houses so far in the two seasons. All 29 families were not on the reunion show.

So if my coworkers professor was correct, about 7 families have lost their homes already out of the original 29. One of the ones missing from the reunion show was the little girl who was allergic to the sun.

It was the show where the family of 3 boys needed help because the Dad was in Iraq. They brought the Dad home from Iraq to see them when the house was done. The didnt demolish the house at all, and they made the bathroom for the boys a carwash. Terrible idea but thats what they did. I dont think they were on the reunion show but I missed that one.

Okay, I'm going to jump in here...

I'm not sure what they're taxes will be, but if the house was built correctly, with energy efficiency in mind a 5200 sq ft house shouldn't be much more than a 2000 sq ft house built 10+ years ago. I know since my house is under 2 years old, about 6,000 sq ft and my power bills, with our family of 6 and 3 adult roommates in the basment runs us about $300 a month and we live in an extreme climate. So, if done right the house could actually be less to heat and power than what they had previously.

How much do you think a 3rd grade teacher makes in Alabama? If he made x amount of dollars don't you think he would have purchased a 5200 sq. ft house? And how much water do you think they use for a water park? I counted 3 double sinks. Do your kids play in the sink?
How many lights are in a 5200sq ft house? Those people are so overwhelmed. I could see it their faces.

I'm sure they are overwhelmed! Having 6 babies, as you know better than me, will do that too you. My point wasn't that they could afford the 5200 sf house on his salary, but that it's possible that a new larger home may actually be more energy efficient than a smaller older home. We moved into our new home when my trips were 11 months old. Our heating bills actually dropped by about $50 a month, even though we had doubled our space and since have had another baby.

And BTW my kids don't play in the sink, only because they can't reach it. They do however find the toilet irresistable when they get the chance to get near it, lol. I did think the sinks were not a great idea, the fact that they're small and lowered means that in a few years they won't be as usuable for the kids and need to be moved higher which will obviously cost more money.

In our particular case, we have found our utilities have gone up since we added on over 900 square feet to our 1500 square foot home. Still not a HUGE house, but in our California neighborhood, it's on the larger side.

Our utilities have gone up. We now have double-paned, energy efficient windows, a energy-efficient furnace, more insulation, etc. We have energy-star appliances everywhere. I think what affects us is the number of lights. We've reduced the number of table lamps and gone with more recessed lighting. Even with dimmers, we have many more lights in the house than ever before. And with 4 kids, we are living in all the rooms, so lights are on. We don't run the furnace more, we haven't changed our lifestyles.

Heating a bigger house, cooling a bigger house, having a better-lit house have all contributed to our higher bills. And utility rates in our area have sky-rocketed! The only thing going down is our water bill. Construction killed most of the landscaping plus we have a front-loader washer that saves tons of water!

Maybe it's just California's high cost environment but I don't find my energy efficient home necessarily cheaper.

Sharon,

Yes, it's the fact that you have more room, more people and more things going on and the fact that heating costs have double and tripled in some places. One thing though, which most people don't know, dimming your lights doesn't reduce the amount of energy they use. Dimming lights are used for mood, not energy efficiency.
