Mine were saying very few words at 2 years as well. My pediatrician referred us to a Licensed Speech therapist and we've started weekly speech therapy. The guidelines say they should be speaking 50 words or more and putting 2 words together by age 2. Anything below that and they are probably delayed. It can be fixed with therapy though, and I can already see it working!

Thank you so much for the tip susan! I will have my mom help me find a speach therapist in our area when we move back home to anchorage, AK. My mom recomended it - she "knows everything." However, hearing actual experience from a triplet mother is more convincing. Mom will say, "I told you so." (Again for the millionth time) My husband and I are so poor since I quit my wonderful job to stay home w my wonerful babies. Was this expensive? Do states or governmet aide these things? I appreciate your input!

We are fortunate in that our insurance covers it 100%, no deductible, no co-pay. I honestly do not know if the states/government covers this as we've been lucky enough to not have to find out - someone else on here may know though. Good Luck!

What you could do with your SPONTANEOUS (we all have natural children) triplets is read up on the threads on fish oil. A lot of us have had great success with this and our speech delayed children.

Do a search on fish oil and you should be able to find a bunch of posts about this.

Someone bumped a thread on how to search if you have any troubles...

Good luck and I hope you see the success that a lot of us did with the fish oil!

I was told that 2 at their adj age which is 8 weeks later for my trio. That 8 weeks made about 200 words different in their speech. Alli was tested for a speech delay at 2 years, she had 30 words, at 2 yrs 2 weeks she had 70 words, etc.

I'm finding videos are a huge help with my one that won't sit and do many books, but he loves the Baby Bumblebee videos and the Brainy Baby video too - he has really increased his language with them.

And we do the Coromega fish oil too - hugs! Enjoy those natural boys! LOLOLOLOL

I just responded to a similar post a couple of days ago. My sons only had about five recognizable words at their 2yr appt. The ped was not concerned. He said they probably have sounds that they make for other items but that I wasn't picking up on them. He wanted them to have 200 words or so by 2 1/2 and they did.

As I mentioned in my post to the other mom. One thing that you can do to help increase your little ones' vocab is to talk, talk, talk to them. Of course reading to them is awesome but you don't need them to sit still to narrate to them.

If they are playing you can say, "B, are you playing with a truck, Mommy sure likes that truck you have, that is a red truck." or on a walk, "Can you hear that airplane? There is an airplane in the sky, look at the white airplane in the blue sky, that is a loud airplane."

Yes, you will sound like you are nuts but it really does help them. Talk to them all the time, while you are giving a bath, making dinner, playing with them. Use descriptive words and be repetitive. Do not try to make them talk, as in: "Can you say cat? Say Daddy?" Do ask them questions - esp. when reading books or on a walk, point to something and ask, "What is that?" Don't force an answer, if they answer or babble, great, then you say, "Yes, that is a leaf, it is a green leaf." And on you go.

Good luck, once they start talking they won't stop!

Marie

You should be able to contact Early Intervention (or State Infant/Toddler program) and they can have your kids evalutated for speech delays. It's a state run program and you can either have them bill your insurance (and the state covers the rest) or you can just have the state cover the expenses w/o involving your insurance.

I just had mine evaluated at 18mo because I thought they were behind (average 6 words). However, when she adjusted them for their prematurity (6weeks) they were w/i an acceptable range (anywhere from right at where they should be, to "6wks" behind). The therapist did recommend another evalution at 2yrs of age since they stop adjusting for prematurity at age 2.

HTH!

-Leslie

Aloha Nita,

I used to work as an early intervention speech pathologist on Oahu. As a parent can make a referral to HI Early Intervention for a speech/language evaluation. The evaluation (and therapy if your boys qualify) is completely free to you. The phone number to make a referral to H-KISS on Maui is:
1-800-235-5477.

Best of luck to you! I really miss Hawaii so much!

Call Early Intervention for a free evaluation. They will "play" with your kids while evaluating gross and fine motor skills as well as speech development and comprehension. Hey, it's free and will give you a better idea of where they are at. They will adjust for prematurity.

Mine were tested at 21 months (had about 3-5 words each). One of mine had about 30 words at the same age and probably 100+ at age 2. The two were measured at about 45% delayed and at the level of a 10-month old...don't know if I buy that having known a lot of 10-month olds...but OUCH!

We started speech and occupational therapy and WOW, what a difference! Within weeks, they had 25-30 words (might have just been a coincidence on the timing). Turns out my one son WAS talking, but just has some strengthening to do in his mouth area so I didn't even hear what he was saying as words.

What can YOU do right now? Play interactive games with them. Get a pull-back race car or something, put it on the floor, say READY....SET....(pause)...GO! And then let it fly. My boys learned this phrase in 1 day -- speech therapist said it usually takes 3-4 weeks.

Say things SIMPLY, like Put Ball ON? Show them where to put it (on top of a block for instance). Wait for them to put it ON the third or fourth time.

Stack blocks as you say, "UP, UP, UP". Knock them over and say, "DOWN, DOWN, DOWN."

Bring out the BUBBLES. Blow some, then ask them, "Want MORE?" Use the hand sign for MORE. After a while, if they make ANY attempt at the sign MORE or the word MORE, blow more bubbles! When the get that, add "Want MORE BUBBLES?"

Hand signs really helped in the beginning too. Reading is of course important and my boys loved it, but these interactive type games we played while pausing and waiting for them to fill in the word worked wonders. The books helped with receptive language, but the games really helped with expressive language.

At 2.5, I'd say my boys are actually advanced speech-wise. Compared with other kids their age in Sunday School and in our park district program they talk a LOT more and use sentences now, while not many of their peers do. Has really, REALLY helped with behavior too!

Good luck!

I dont think that "spontaneous" triplets are different from triplets conceived via medical assistance when it comes to potential speech delays. That piece of information was probably not necessary.

I agree.. I would check the other threads about fish oil and I would have them referred to EI to have them evaluated.

good luck.

Hi! My trio is going to be 2 in less than two weeks. I, too, was worried about their speech a bit. I know that multiples can tend to have their "own" language, but I wanted to get them started on English too, lol. However, my kids are signing up a storm, thanks to Signing Time! I highly recommend that. Now they are trying to say some of the words as they sign!

We did try the fish oil. I haven't been great about it this past month, but still figure that it can only help them! I would just work with getting them to try to repeat you! Just talk as you do things, as simple as "pop" as you pop bubbles. Good luck!

When I saw this post earlier I said to myself oh no she said the "N" word. Some ppl get really freaked out about this. Try not to take it personal. The "N" word is just a hot button issue for alot of us moms who conceived using medical intervention. When the "N" word is used some take it as an attack. The way that it is perceived is that you think that your kiddos are more special than ours are. I know that is probably not the case but we live in a world that is soooooooo politically correct, its just the way it is.

This site has been so helpful to me and to so many others. Please continue to come back and dont worry about a few who are not that helpful anyway.

Lauren

You might want to get a Speech evaluation and perhaps if you think they need it get them therapy. Some will come out to your home for their sessions (I recommend at that age). I had children that needed ST for a couple of years I tell you I talked non stop to my kids about everything and used Signing Times very early on so they could sign to me what they couldn't say.

Good luck.

Call Early Intervention and have them evaluated. It is not uncommon for preemies to be a bit behind in their speech.

You could have them evaled by Early intervention, they'd come to you over the next year and then at 3 yrs old they would be evaled by the school system. Preschool for 3 and 4 year old helps too.
I wouldn't worry to much, my one son didn't talk til he was 4 really.
I just met an almost 2 year old girl that spoke incredible, so varies.

Everyone learns at different rates. Mine made up a few words for things like "dibadons" were slippers. They'd babble to each other faster than when they did to us.

My my boys both screamed at 18 months, loved to holler, thats a non verbal way to express too. Girls tend to bite.

You're doing fine, enjoy them, if you have a question ask, and if you don't like the answer ask someone else. Sometimes universities have speech departments and students who can eval for less $ then a professional, call the colleges with those depts.
