#269219, "NTR What kind of food do your kids eat?"
Not really specific food items but types of foods. We live in the country and I can and butcher most of our foods. We rarely eat anything storebought other than staples like flour, sugar, etc... My kids are used to eating that stuff and rarely have 'packaged' foods like canned raviolis and whatnot.
Anyway I'm in charge of groceries for camp this summer and not sure what to get. I've had my kids' friends come over and look like I have 3 horns on my head when I set a loaf of home-made bread and pot of mac n cheese on the table.... it doesn't LOOK like mac n cheese because it's not orange with itty bitty noodles - it's big macaroni noodles and creamy cheese sauce with onion bits.
SO - if your kids were camping for a week what kinds of foods would they expect and be familiar with? For example would they drool at a 2inch thick slice of home-made bread dipped in milk/egg and fried in sweet butter with cinnamon on top or rebel expecting a slab of stroehman white toasted in a toaster with butter and cinnamon - if french toast is on the menu? omelettes or scrambled eggs with fried potatoes or toaster dried waffles?
potatoes from a can or fresh? meat, veggies, potatoes cooked into stew or thick stew from a can? jarred tomato sauce or fresh tomatoes mashed and cooked down?
Most of the boys going live in town with working parents. I want make sure they'll actually EAT what I cook.

My kids eat all kinds of "packaged" foods and would stick their tounges out at onions in Mac and Cheese, so I can see your concern. Onions or not, Martha herself couldn't beat Kraft Mac and Cheese! LOL!
Scrambled eggs, regular ole' french toast, eggos, hash browns (slave all you want or just buy 'em, nobody is gonna care), regular toast, pancakes, sausage, etc are great breakfast ideas.
PB&J sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, raw veggies and dip, fresh fruit, onionless mac and cheese, Deli sandwiches, etc is great for lunch.
Fried chicken, cooked veggies (from a can or grown in your organic garden, lol), hamburgers, salads with Ranch, pasta salads, speghetti w/meatballs, tacos/fajitas, rolls or buns, lasanga, etc are great dinner items.
Good luck walking amoungst the common folk, who eat from cartons and boxes! LOL!

Camp food usually consists of
beanies and weanies
5 bean chili
hamburgers
hotdogs on a stick
pasta and sauce
pancakes/french toast sticks/waffles
scrambled eggs
bacon/sausage
pbj
lunchmeat
ravioli
salads
things that you can make a bunch of in as little pots as possible and over a fire if you dare.
I would look at you funny w/ mac and cheese w/ onions and I like onions..LOL.Just not the way this momma thinks of mac n cheese.

It's harder than you might think! I'm lost in grocery stores! For as much time as I seem to spend in them you'd think I knew everything there.... I can zip through the spices in no time but put me in the canned goods aisle and I'll be there all day looking for a plain can of beans! I had no idea what 'rotell tomatoes' were until I ran out of canned tomatoes and had to find some at the store. I brought home rotells... I now know that they are NOT diced tomatoes ready for spaghetti!
which brings me to..... spaghetti and meatballs - that would be a good one. I can make the meatballs in advance and freeze them. I make a veggie sauce for mine with diced tomatoes, carrots, green peppers, onions, and tomatoe puree. Would it be acceptable or do I need to find a store sauce? If so WHAT KIND? specifically..... there are MILLIONS of different sauces! It's like looking for the perfect blade of grass in a 5 acre field!
same with goulash... macaroni with tomato sauce and ground beef - mashed tomatoes or sauce from a jar? what kind?

Spaghetti with tomato sauce is always a great hit with kids. No, you don't need to do anything store bought for this if you make a standard tomato sauce. In fact, meatballs are generally optional and my children adore spaghetti. I have yet to meet children who don't.
Oops!! I just read your ingredient list for spaghetti sauce. If you want kids to eat this you'll probably want to leave out the green peppers and be sure to puree the sauce sufficiently that no one realizes that there are carrots and onions in there. That alone would cause my children to turn up their noses -- not that I'm a vegetable hater, but my children have been able to identify and reject any and all vegetables since they were about 8 months old and this is an ongoing battle. We are now submitting to carrots and green beans and peas and corn on a limited basis in limited amounts. In short, look for a marinara type sauce with good flavor.
A little bit of garlic also improves the sauce and falls under the heading of "what they don't know won't hurt them." Also, a tiny bit of sugar in the sauce cuts the acidity of the tomatoes and makes for a better tomato sauce in most recipes -- just FYI.
Children also love "chicken strips" and/or "chicken nuggets." Again, these don't have to be packaged or store bought (if you're up to prepping sufficient quantities for a herd bigger than your standard herd -- lololol!!). But, be sure to bread them and fry them up as they are generally served. If in doubt, drop your guards for a brief moment and purchase one $.99 package of chicken nuggets at Wendy's and explore this childhood delicacy. Most kids enjoy either honey mustard sauce and/or barbecue sauce to go with these.
Potatoes -- hash browns; french fries; mashed -- MOST children adore them in nearly any form. If you add ketchup (whether home made or packaged) the kids will be in heaven. Be sure your ketchup recipe is comparable to packaged -- get a packet when you pick up that sample of chicken nuggets!!
Camping should always include baked beans and hotdogs grilled on long skewers over open fires. Marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars are a necessity as S'mores are required camping fare.
Lunches include the universally well-received grilled cheese sandwiches previously mentioned along with the ubiquitous PB&J. Homemade jellies are wonderful and are not "dissed" unless you do something strange with it like adding green pepper and/or onion. If you do, then I'm sorry, you're on your own...
In short, it sounds like you are really enjoying your farming and that you're raising children with healthy appetites and an appreciation for the great work effort you're putting into your food. That's wonderful. Simply look at the standard stuff most kids eat (like Kraft Mac 'n Cheese) and try to stay true to those standards for children who have not been raised as your's have been. And, with respect to the mac 'n cheese, I would strongly encourage you to find some Kraft if you intend to serve this because if you so much as get creative with the cheese, (pale yellow macaroni?? What cheese are you using??) you could wind up with leftover macaroni sufficient to feed Grant's army and some very hungry and disgruntled campers.
My kids also adore "peanut butter sandwiches" made with saltine crackers and peanut butter; saltines with salmon salad and/or tuna salad on top; pancakes; eggs; french toast -- whether home made or pre-fab, but preferably home made; fried chicken, roasted chicken, any kind of chicken; breads of every type (unless I get too creative on them and get something too whole grain and "crunchy-esque").
Oh, why not put together a menu and run it by everyone? You'd get some pointers on things and have a pretty sure idea that everything was going to float.
And, it's a good thing if the kids get to explore new tastes while at camp -- but you also want the food to be fun and well accepted with no hungry kids!
Good luck!! I'll look forward to hearing what all you're serving up.

Although my kids eat organic, homemade stuff, I think that if I was planning groceries for a camp, I would go with mass appeal, easy to cook, buy in bulk, and "normal" food for the troops. In other words, I wouldn't expect them to eat cucumbers dipped in hummus like my kids do. I would think casserole-type meals and simple foods that would appeal to the most people. So I would go with toaster waffles and regular white bread, hamburgers, hot dogs and other "camp" food. I think your supposed to eat "camp" food when your camping!!!! Plus, I imagine you will have a budget and you what the most food for the price.

There will be no electricity. Everything has to be cooked over the fire or in the coals. For my own family we do a lot of foil packet foods... potatoes, meat, veggies wrapped in foil and dropped in the coals. Leftovers are dumped in a pot with water and cooked the next day with dried beans for soup.... would they eat that kind of stuff? or only campbell's soup in a can?
macaroni salad we can do the first day (after that there's no place to keep it cold)
IN it - macaroni (the box kind?), mayo (hellmans?? - I make my own at home), tuna (starkist?), onions (plain white or are red ones ok?)(or leave the onions separate and let them add it if they want it??), olives (green or black or both?), boiled eggs (brown ok or hide the shells?)
baked beans - northern beans soaked overnight and dumped into a dutch oven, covered with a layer of bacon and brown sugar. Or canned pork n beans?
scrambled eggs with meat and pototoes diced and cooked altogether or all need to be separate?
fried fish and potato cakes (mashed potatoes made into patties with fish fillets steamed over top of them) or cook the fish and potatoes separate? (not breaded freezer patties of processed fish - fresh fish skinned and filetted and stuck on top of the potatoes)
No onions in ANYTHING???? or just not in mac n cheese? I do LOVE my onions!
meat is the easy thing.... it's all getting grilled or stick-burnt so I don't have to wash meat pans!

It's not too restricting... just takes longer to boil water and things like toast have to be toasted on a stick or fried in butter... and anything to be 'refridgerated' has to be dropped in the creek on a rope or fit into the cooler. The cooler is pretty much reserved for milk, eggs, and condiments. Meat will go in the creek in a trashbag staked to the bank.

Are you referring to real camp? No stoves or refrigerators? Using gas cookers or camp fires and coolers?
If that's the case, I'd suggest camp fire meals where you put meat, potatoes, carrots and onion in a tinfoil pouch and roast it in the campfire. You can use chicken, roast, hamburgers, etc.
Pot of pinto bean soup. I season mine with streak o lean and a ham hock.
We boiled omlets last year. Each child cracked an egg in a plastic baggie, added omlet fixings of their choosing (bacon bits, ham, cheese, veggies, etc.) and then we boiled them in a pot.
Hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, pastries, Little Debbie snacks, fresh fruit - apples, grapes, bananas, chips, make smores.
If they are hungry, they'll eat is my philosophy.

We do a lot of foil packets for my own kids but I wasn't sure if that's one of the 'not normal' things that other kids might not eat if it's all in together....
I love the boiled omelettes idea! I've never tried doing that!

I would let the kids do their own foil packs if you have time, they could put them together after lunch and then someone will just have to put them in the coals later..have an assembly line.
Chicken bbq/soy sauce/terriki sauce italian dressing vegies..and they can add what they want.
You can also do Sausages on a stick for breakfast w/ some eggs
We do chili w/ hamburger, navy beans, kidney beans, sauce and a prepack of chili spices if you want to make it heartier add some pasta.
As for spagheti sauce..I use Ragu, very plain..but then I add my own spices.
For a pasta bowl casserole you can take along peperoni ,it doesn't have to be refridgerated.
Also I have made pizza over a camp fire....
The premade pizza crust like Boboli sauce and cheese meat left over from breakfast works great for toppings and some flat piece of cook wear..cookie sheet wrapped in foil or pan.
Whe we first started to camp there was a web site for real camp recipes...let me see if I can find it.

I think some of the best things to make for a bunch of kids that yo really don't know their eating ahbits would be the ones that you make the main meal and they can add the rest.
Walking Taco off of this site sounds good and easy also.
Now I want to go camping..I am hungry..LOL

Love the site! Thank you!
Your kids would eat the type of stuff on there? At least at camp? Even if it's not 'normal' food?
I guess if it's named something funky at least they won't be expecting the same things they eat at home??? right?

Everybody isn't going to get every meal filled with their favorites. Relax and concentrate on the fun of fetching things chilling in the river and cooking on the campfire. Part of the adventure will be trying new things that don't require microwave instructions. My kids eat a lot of what you cook for your own kids - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I agree with Robin.
I take 22 girl scouts camping every year. Most of the time at least some of them don't like whatever is on the menu (including my girls).
Too bad. If your hungry you'll eat.
Maybe one or two of the girls really won't like something but usually the others all decide that after running through the woods all day "hobo stew" is fabulous.
We always have granola bars and PBJ for the one or two who can't face the meal.
Good Luck.

My kids eat alot of stuff on there...I do modify it...like no greenpeppers(but I don't like them either)or soem spices that I know we don't like..but for the most part they will eat it all.
And they are starving after being outdoors doing hikes and swimming and playing hard in the fresh air...
Good snacks to keep on hand are jerky, crackers,pb crackers..ya know the orange ones that match the mac n cheese, fruit(apples and bananas in your case..I bet grapes would be good tied up in some ziplock bags w/ the river water)

There are not alot of expectations a child has for his camp food, he/she wants it easy, to help cook it over a fire if he/she can and easy clean up since I am sure they will all have mess kits and be responsible for them.
The Dutch Oven is a great tool, a potato bar with all the toppings available was real popular where I went to camp. We did have yummy things like homemade bread and french toast with cinnamon since that was the norm at home. I wouldn't over spice anything, I would make it bland and let them decide what and how much they want to put in. Just keep it simple and fun, spaghetti is another easy fix, just watch what you put in it and make sure if it is homemade it doesn't have chunks of fresh stuff in it.
Hope you find somethings that you will be able to incorporate with your family as well as long as your going outside the normal realm for them..LOL It seems as though it will be a great adventure for all.

Get OFF my threads and stop pestering me! I don't want my thread deleted because you can't find something better to do than copy pics from another site. It's IGNORANT to paste other people's photos. I didn't post that on the twin site for you to claim and toss around OTHER websites.

It was a picture I posted a while ago on TMMB (twinsmagazinemessageboard) about the mess my kids were making in the house that day. Two of my kids had left peanut butter, jelly and bread all over the kitchen... I followed the trail through the house with my camera looking for the culprits. That is jelly on whole wheat bread on my carpet.
It was meant to be a 'funny' post to make someone else feel better about her own similar day. It's not something that needs to be hidden but the photo should not have been taken to another site for her own use to mock me.

personally, my children survive on air. They eat nothing. I figure that I'm saving on food bills for now and one day they'll eat me out of house and home, so I'm ahead right now.
Not sure what the difference is for kids with parents who work outside the house as we manage to cook real food. I would rather cut off my right arm than bring Chef boyardee into this house! but that's just the italian in me.
if they do eat, they do enjoy tacos. Otherwise, air seems to sustain them.

I am with Dionne....Your menue is making me drool!!!
My husband actually cooks very similar to you...only we don't live on a farm. Your french toast sounds divine!
My triplets eat alot...fresh fruit, veggies, cheese, yogurt, anything my husband cooks up...my 9 year old is picky she was on a white diet for a while...actually one onf the trio is becoming like her big sister. :OP doesn't even want ot try it. My middle girl ate 1/2 of my crab cakes adn stuffed flounder last week!!!!
I would stick to camp food though. especially if you won't have a place to store things. I would stay away from the onions. You gotta make Smores ...easy and the kid love them. Peanut butter and apples...my girls love that ...except one...she is allergic to peanuts.
How old are the boys attending camp? For macaroni salad I leave out the mayo. I make a tri color pasta mix it with Italian dressing, PArm adn Romano cheeses, black olives, minced red green and yellow pepper I am sure there is one more ingrediant but cannot think of it right now.
Good luck on you adventure.

Ma--please don't take this the wrong way, but kids with working parents eat normal food...I don't think there is a menu for 'working vs sah parents"...
feed them what boys would like, keep it simple. I'm pretty sure you've done PB&J, hotdogs, etc. Working parents or not, most kids eat.

My point was WE don't eat 'normal'. I know the kids who come here for dinner or overnights make comments quite often about 'that's not what my mom does' or 'that's not macaroni and cheese' or 'the stare' when they expect grilled cheese and get thick bread smothered in cheese that you eat with a fork.
I was asking what 'normal' is knowing that WE are not.

I used to be the camp director for the Young Women's group at church and some of the best things we did were:
Spaghetti (I canned the sauce prior and then only need to heat it and cook the noodles)
Chili (Again you can precan this for preserving it)
Served with:
Dutch Oven bisquits
Over baked potates
Frito chips (open a single serve bag and cover them with chili and cheese, eat out of the bag)
Stew
Eggs - cheese omlettes or scrambled with veggies and sausage or bacon
Burritos
Fish (which they had caught that day, cooked by wrapping in foil and baking in the campfire)
Dutch oven chicken (look at your local library for dutch oven cookbooks)

Here's an idea. How's about you feed your children from a can so that you can clean your house a little? With a house like this, and all the germs and bacteria growth, nutrition is the least of your worries!

Is that from the show those British ladies do..."How clean is your house?"....They find they nastiest houses in Britain and go in and show the owners how to clean...then they run tests on all the bacteria and gunk and show what kind of bugs live in that kind of filth.
I'm pretty anal about housekeeping but it totally freaked me out...as do these photos.
I saw the show this past Saturday and immediately Dysoned the bottom of my toaster oven! dh thought I'd lost my mind...icky icky ugh!

That is just nasty, who takes pictures of poop and nasty rooms. Why is the garbage on the back porch? Is that garbage? If this is for real then the excuse that went along with the jam sandwich does not apply here! I mean this does not make anyone laugh it makes me sad for the kids who have to live in the filth and for the parents that let them.
I wouldn't let my kids eat at your house if this is how you keep it, no wonder kids say stuff if they come over or god forbid have a sleepover...

It's my front porch. And those bags and boxes are the contents of a box truck of 'stuff' that was delivered to my house. I've spent the last couple months sorting the clothing and miscellanous household stuff and taking it to charity as well as preparing much to be mailed out to other women on the twin site.
It's not trash, and it's not my everyday home appearance.

They are actually bags that the goodwill unloaded on her porch to be given away to those that need it. The other pics are from a day when all 11 of her kids were acting up and she was repsonding to someone elses post on ANOTHER board. Back off! You guys are some of the most judgemental people I have ever seen.

There is NO WAY a house becomes that FILTHY in one day!?! I don't think anyone is judging...simply 'commenting' on the pictures in front us...this is NO illusion! AND, I didn't see 11 kids in any of those pics! Also, considering the toddlers can diaper each other, I'd think there would be plenty of time to clean & organize!
While I'm all for charity & giving to others....clearly that project needs to be put on hold until this HOME HER FAMILY lives in is clean & clutter free! SERIOUSLY!

Amy,
Maybe I am missing the reason why you are being so mean. We have talked before and I have never thought of you to be such a mean person. Do you have 11 kids living in your house. Unless you do you should not comment. And I don't know of any 1,2, or 3 year olds that can diaper themselves. They can however take their own diapers off and draw all over the walls and bed with them while they are suppose to be napping. And I HAVE seen pics of all 11 of her kids. These pics were taken all out of context in the first place. These pics were on a post about having a bad day and how kids can truley tear up a house in 10 mins. You also need to take into consideration that a family has way more things than a family of say 5. Once again none of you on here knows where these came from so you should hold off on being judgemental.

With all due respect Gerri, I believe it is more of me being in a state of SHOCK rather than being MEAN! Really, why are these pics even out in cyber world?
Oh, I have had more than 11 kids over at one time but no, not to live in my house 24/7. Yes, I know just how quickly diapers can come off and messes can be made. My house gets messy just like everyone elses. I'm just saying, there is no way this mess could happen in ONE day....I don't care whose house it is or how many kids live there.

I am sorry if this is upsetting to her but I lived in a neighborhood where 10-14 children were the norm and nobody's house looked like this at anytime. We had five kids, total 7 with adults and our house got messy but nothing like this.
I am sorry if that offends her or you or anyone but if those are real pictures and it was a joke then I don't get it. Maybe that makes me a bad person but it also makes me want to help. It is also not in reality as you say that a house can get that way in 10 mins. I know you are trying to stick up for your friend and I admire that but if you didn't know all the background and you saw these pictures what would you think?
I think calling any of us on this issue judgemental is harsh and judgemental in itself.

Than so be it. I am not for arguing with any of you. I do happen to be friends with a woman that has 9 kids and I have seen her kitchen look that way and I have seen their kids bedroooms look a mess. I don't think it is something that is as horrible as it is being made to look here. If I saw those pics without having the background that I have than I would have read the whole post then read the member that posted it and came to the realization that she is stir the pot and not said anything. That is why I chose not to get involved in the drama that has been going on on this board and those ARE my friends. But maybe that is just me.
I would stick up for any of you that I felt was being bashed for no reason. That would also be you to. She is not really a friend in that I don't talk to her off the boards but she ia MOM and that is really all that matters to me.

Amy:
The person who posted these pictures was on a rampage against the original poster yesterday and is making personal attacks. The pictures were posted to elicit further unkind comments and to embarrass and humiliate the original poster.
I know that you are a very kind person who carries an enormous load and that you would never want to hurt anyone else. It's one of the things that I love about you.
'Just wanted to give you a head's up and alert you to what is really going on here so that you don't get drawn into this sideways.
BTW, when are we all getting together? Hopefully soon! The sun is shining!!

I am absolutely appalled by this type of mean-spirited attack.
The veracity of any photographs is simply not the issue here. What is the issue is that you would take a good-spirited discussion and turn it into an attack on someone who was asking a legitimate question.
I believe that you were also the person who indicated that we need to be only triplet mothers because that is what unifies use. Well, I'm trying hard to understand what this unprovoked attack has to do with us being triplet mothers.
Please stop what you're doing. It's unnecessary and it's simply cruel. It is also destroying this board and preventing new triplet mothers from getting the help that they need as they go through their dangerous pregnancies.
BTW, I don't recognize your i.d. and don't remember your pregnancy with triplets. I also don't see your participation in discussions regarding triplets and/or their requirements, so I'm sort of wondering what you're doing here, besides stirring up a lot of controversy and hurt.
And, ruining the forum for everybody...
Please stop making these personal attacks on people.

Is this for real?? Wow how shocking and totally unhealthy for any child to live in. Please tell me how you can ignore this type of atmosphere when you have sooooo many children living with you? How is it the least bit sanitary for your children? You can't really tell me that a kitchen looks like that after breakfast! You can't really tell me that your kids can do this after 10 minutes of play! Really, can you explain how this happens? I have a house full of children and my house doesn't look like this! Really....
